Košice á la Vincent van Gogh
Vincent Willem van Gogh (30.3.1853 -
29.7.1890) was a Dutch painter, one of the greatest figures of world visual
arts of the 20th century. He upgraded impressionism to a new level.
With the aim of expressing his feelings, he became the founder of a new
artistic movement – expressionism.
The sun-drenched landscape in contrast with
the architectural object in the central part of the picture gives the observer
a sense of the summer atmosphere of the city. Robust paintbrush strokes with
intentionally significant pastiness make this feeling even stronger. The object
of author's interest is The Cathedral of St. Elizabeth. It is a gothic
cathedral and the biggest church in Slovakia with the total area of 1200 m² and
capacity of 5000 people. The landmark of the city is located in the centre of
Hlavná Street in Košice.
