Sarcophagus á la Marcel Duchamp
Marcel Duchamp (28.6.1887 - 2.10.1968) was
a French painter. In 1917, Duchamp together with his colleague, also a painter,
J. Stella and a collector W. Arensberg have decided to buy a urinal of the
"Bedforshire" brand, which he called The Fountain and then sent it to
an exhibition. However, he sent it under a false name – R. MUTT. They did not
want to exhibit the artwork and did so only after intervention of the
committee, of which Duchamp was also a member. This event is historically considered
the beginning of the ready-made artistic opinion.
The work – object Sarcophagus refers to the last
noble owner of Bojnice castle, Count Ján Pálffy, and the events related to his
tomb.
